Bennie Gonzales Architectural Collection
Bennie Gonzales Digital Collection at Scottsdale Public Library’s Scottsdale Heritage Connection is a collection of digital images created from slides loaned by his widow, Diane Gonzales. Scottsdale Public Library has the digital images only, the State of Arizona Archives holds the slides currently.
Bennie M. Gonzales, FAIA (June 11, 1924 – November 20, 2008) was a native of Arizona, attended Arizona State University and worked as an architect for over 50 years, winning numerous awards and honors for his work. His work is characterized by cultural elements and a lack of 90 degree angles, producing a Southwestern style that has been imitated throughout the region. Gonzales designed most of Scottsdale, Arizona’s, major municipal buildings including Scottsdale City Hall, the Los Arcos Mall, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and the Civic Center Library. His resume also included hundreds of private homes and residences throughout Arizona.
